Recycling: mattresses

We spend more time with our mattresses than most of our friends and family, and they only last for around 10 years. Once it is time for you and your mattress to part ways, what is the best way to dispose of the bulky thing?

The Squeeze: Australians send over 1.25 million mattresses to landfill every year.

It’s hard to know what to do with our old mattresses, so most of us throw them out - they are the most common item put out at local council collections. But mattresses contain lots of valuable materials, like steel, timber and foam - which is all recyclable!

There are a number of mattress recyclers who, for a small fee, will take your mattresses and either clean and provide them to charitable organisations, or strip them down and recycle each of the materials.

If you are feeling creative (and have lots of time on your hands), you could be inspired to reuse your mattress in one of these clever ways:

Please let us know if you know of any more: Visit Soft Landing in Sydney & Illawarra; Renewable Energy Corp in Sydney; Land Savers in the Newcastle region; Bed Collect in Victoria; Mattress Gator in Melbourne; The Mattress Recyclers in Brisbane and Sydney; Steps Group in the Sunshine Coast and EMRC in WA.

Living Lime: In Vancouver it is now illegal to throw out mattresses into garbage dumps. Since the ban has been in place in 2011, there has been a boom in mattress recycling with tens of thousands of mattresses already recycled. This has prevented mountains of mattresses ending up in landfill and created job opportunities.

PS: Let us know on our daily lime facebook page or in the comments below if you have recycled your mattress.
